From Brakedwell http://www.pprune.org/archive:

When I was stationed at Bovindon in the early sixties we used to wander down and stagger back from the Royal Oak! A very young Shirley Bassey and her husband Kenneth Hulme who lived nearby were regular visitors the pub.

I am so sad to hear that these lovely people have left the pub. They really tried hard at it and did wonders to it's appearance. There was good quality food and always a very warm welcome and a smile. I wish Rob and Sel all the best for their future.

I just remember using the off licence at the back when out riding the ponies aged about 13. One would hold whilst the others went in to buy Gummie Bears, flying saucers and Liquorice. Lately loved the place as a dog friendly pub with great quality food and service. Such a shame :(

The only landlords I can recall in my time drinking at the Royal Oak were; Ian and Jan, Lewis and Brenda and the last time I drank there it was owned by a Mr Rammage. I'm afraid that's all I can recall. Hope it helps a little.

I remember the Bovingdon Revels in the 80's. It was a time when 'neighbours' were great friends also. The village used to be closed off to traffic and the high street was a party for all. It was a brilliant occasion and loved by all the residents of Bovingdon. What happened to our yearly fun? Now we have to wait for a special event before we can unfurl the bunting and banners and have a good weekend of fun. I think this occasion will be as good as the heady days of the late 70's and 80's. Admittedly I don't have the levels of energy I had in the 80's. But I'm still up for this fabulous weekend of revelry. Here's to many more!! Let's bring back the 'yearly' event called the Bovingdon Revels.

Sorry To See Sel & Rob Leave The Royal Oak.
A Friendlier Couple You Couldn't Wish To Meet.
When We Moved To Bovingdon Nearly 2 Years Ago They Made Us Feel Welcome & Became Good Friends.
We Wish Them Well In Their Endevours And Hope That The New Owner Will Keep The Pub As It Is.

STOP PRESS!
If you haven't already booked a table for our Quiz this coming Monday, you better move fast................once again the action will begin at 7.30pm, with a supper being served around 9pm, at the halfway point.

Entry is £5 per person, which includes the food!

Cash prizes for the first and second place teams, naturally and a bag of lemons for those who find the questions the most challenging (the last placed team!)

Our champions, , return to defend their crown - is there any team out there who think they can compete??

To reserve your space, call the pub ........it's first come, first served so don't delay.

I was up at the airfield getting David McCallum's autograph! I lived in Bovingdon from 1962-1972. I remember Mr Hamer very well and Mrs Leaper the music teacher. I remember the planes flying very low over my house opposite where Dudley House now is. And had a Saturday job at Williams the iron mongers (was DIxons) and seems to be Jarmans in the photos. Have you seen the Remember Bovingdon website?
